Truth is, the wiring, the measures, the board, the butchering, everything in this board is a PITA. I think I’m going to switch for a composite one.
Even audio is not working right know, so I prefer to use a composite screen and a usb sound card :’(
personally i would advise not to give up on the LCD (unless its dead, never give up)....

the HDMI screen is alot better than the composite....

i have a feeling that the mod you have done, may be the issue....

can you post some pics of what youve done so far.....

I know, that’s why I went with this lcd. I’ve read that there are issues with this mod and the zero W, which is the raspberry I used. So I’m going to revert the mod, and try again 😃

Hi Veteran

I bought a Pi zero W week ago and decide to try to make a Gameboy Zero instead of just sticking it into a arcade controller case.

I was looking for step-by-step tutorials for GBZ builds on you-tube and started with wermy's build. Unfortunately I've found your build after I ordered most of the parts from aliexpress, ebay, gearbest and OSHpark (no shipping fee Power Strip for GBZ).

I thought there are no working builds that are without massive amounts of glue, butchered case, electric tape and Gordian wires.

I'd really like to copy your build because aesthetically and functionally pleasing for me (best build so far).

Now I have these parts ordered:

Gameboy DMG case - aliexpress (plus gameboy plastic buttons, silicon rubber pads and case screen cover)

6 button PCB Controller - aliexpress (ordered 6 button pcb just in case I would decide to use all 6 buttons)

Adafruit powerboost 500 Charger - ebay (bought it instead of bangood power boost model)

micro switches 6x6x10 plus caps - aliexpress

Stilll missing audio jack that would fit the gameboy case like yours does.

My main question is are there any HDMI displays available for purchase that can substitute your model used in this build that you know of?

Thanks in advance and thank your for sharing your project with me (it is the most eye pleasing I've seen so far).

So I undid the power saving mod, and it does the same. When I’m in battery the pi zero w reboots after a glitch, when I’m wired the screen goes black and the voltage drops to 2.5. I have to switch off the main switch to get the pi zero alive again 😭.

My psu is one from banggood. There are different models with different Max current?

In fact my lcd board is not the same as yours. My board has three voltage regulators. Don’t know I’d this board draws more current.

EDIT: Has someone tried this tipe of board?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/Dual-USB-DC-3- ... 1570768169

Seems like a banggood but with a 2A output.

Sorry for double post.

I made some discoveries. I injected 5V, 2 A Max with my bench power supply directly to the 5V rail, bypassing the banggood psu, the battery and the safe shutdown.

Current doesn’t go beyond 0.65 amps, maybe there is a max that I can’t see with te current visualizer.

Thing is, that, when I select the game, screen goes down, it shows the kedei logo and then it shows the game running. So it’s like screen reboots or loses hdmi connection, don’t know for sure. But thing is that everything is a power issue.

I don’t really know how to solve it, probably I will upgrade the psu, because pi zero w + kedei + banggood is... well.. nogood 😂

i really dont know what is causing your issues....
(you've done some mods, and without seeing exactly what you've done... its a case of punching into the dark)

but for me, i know that not having a good power connection has been an issue....

the Pi Zero W and the Generic Power Module have never given me any issues with the Kedei screen (which ever variant it is)
i've also used the Kedei and the Generic Power Module with a Pi3 without many issues (only really issue is the lightenbolt, but still plays fine)

i've used the one in this build only twice (which is a shame as its the easier out of the two to install)

and i've used the newer variant a few times (and i'm current doing a build for someone using it, same items as you)

i doubt that the setup you have is the culprit in this..... but how you've set it up (wiring and mods)

you could maybe try something like this.....
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10W-3-7 ... 4c4dlWhvwE
(i havent tried one yet, but do have a couple which i was planning to use with a OrangePi Lite)

or better still buy Helder board, it cost a bit more
(but you get what you pay for in this world, it blows the others out of the water)

Here is some images of my build, let me know if you see something strange. I pretty much followed some post from your build and others with the kedei screen.

Right now the psu is desoldered from the board as I’m using my bench supply to test current draw.

[SOLVED]

So I thought about what you said about the wiring, and decided to change the ground wire to the upper left pad, right where the original switch was.

So there has not been another reset issue since then. Loads games fine while charging and only drawing from battery.

So the ground connection for my board, can be on the pad of the voltage regulator, don’t know why, but that was the solution 😃.

that's brilliant.....

you'd be surprised how the littlest of things can hold you back in a build....

but these screens (kedei) are very touchy about how it get the power, and i've had similar issues and just by changing the wiries and the points to where the power goes resolved it.....

even though the generic power module has been my go to....
i really like the new power module Helder has come up with (cheaper alternatives are available, but not as feature packed)....

https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=6421

i personally havent tried it yet, for obvious reasons (its not available yet)... but it looks like a bullet proof option....
(i appreciate, if people are on a budget it may not be high on their list of things to get... but its about the same cost as an adafruit.... and you really do get what you pay for with Helder)

So I followed this build while making one of my own. My main issue was the HDMI cable, and see you had trouble also. I found a great solution! I found a seller on aliexpress who offered custom HDMI FPV cables, but with the ribbon cable soldered to the plugs instead of that flimsy connector. So simply ordered one with the correct plugs and asked them not to solder anything as I want to do that myself (this is the key to my success ;) ) See pictures below.

Parts:
Kedei HDMI screen
Tinkerboy control board
Cambles safe shutdown
Adafruit power module

I won't describe each step in my build, as that has pretty much been covered, but simply wanted to share this as its works and fits perfectly!
