It sounds like the RetroArch control settings are wrong. Have you tried any of the other emulators?
On the main menu, press start and choose "Configure input", when you get to "left trigger" just start holding down a button you've already mapped to skip the other input options, and then press the SELECT button for the hotkey button. That might work.

thanks! I think that may have done the trick....seems to be working with snes and gbc now.
it refuses to load gba though (or is that beyond the capabilities of the rpi0?) - sorry I'm noob at all these pi things...more au fait with the electronics side.

edit - even some snes roms don't want to load - do some roms just not play nice with retropie? (working on computer with windows/snes9x)

And I'm also getting the restart behaviour mentioned earlier - it's intermittent. Sometimes it'll shut down, but other times it restarts. Stock image from your onedrive, only thing I changed was my wifi and the controls as per your post.

GBA and other emulators will need a BIOS to work, you can find more info on the retropie wiki

Maybe you can try changing the emulator it uses for SNES? (when you select a game, you're shown a screen that says "press a button to configure", option 1 changes the default emulator. Use the start button in this menu to select items) I'm not 100% sure what would cause some games to not work.

Check the power switch is soldered down properly and that it's being properly moved over to the on position and not halfway or anything like that. Also, try shutting it down using the menus (press start in the main menu and scroll all the way to the bottom of the list) to see if shutting down that way has the same problem.

alright thanks for that! the restart thing hasn't happened again so maybe it was just once or twice i didn't totally flick the switch one way or the other.

next is bluetooth - I tried pairing a SFC30 and SFC30 pro 8bitdo controller with the rpi, but I can't get it detected. I followed the instructions on the retropie page, updated the firmware etc so I'm stumped. wireless works so at least I know for sure i've got a rpi 0 W..

Bluetooth is turned off in my image by default, did you turn it back on?

I went into config -> bluetooth -> detect devices . or do you mean something else?

Hey, I got your kit and so excited to get it going!. Unfortunately, I only seem to get a white screen booting up. I know it's running since I can ssh to the pi (after configuring on the SD card directly). All the fbtft stuff seems to show up as being setup by checking lsmod and dmesg. I checked continuity to each and every one of the pins for the screen. 1 through 14 all check out perfectly fine. None are shorted to eachother other than 1, 11-14 all being ground. I've tried redownloading and reflashing the image as well just in case. I did notice that fbtft says that GPIO18 is for "LED". I assume this is the backlight buy if I set it to the backlight doesn't go off.

Any ideas?

Hi all, I literally fell in love with this project. Sounds like a good starting point for me before jumping into a GBZ and all the solding/ case mod it implies (I plan on building 3 or 4 handled devices, for my personal use)
My issue is I cannot 3D print nor laser cut acrylic in any way: can this be sold along with the kit?

The soldering for this is probably harder than a GBZ since it's pretty much all surface mount.
You can use a service like Ponoko.com or razorlab.co.uk for laser cutting.

If you're just starting with building stuff, I wouldn't recommend my project. Maybe look into GBZ aio (all in one) boards?

The image should work without any changes needed.
I'm not sure what the issue is, check again that continuity is ok and nothing is connected to anything it shouldn't be.
You put insulation tape across the bottom of the pi?
