Question on modifying a Targus USB hub

Post by 3kidsinaustin » Mon Feb 11, 2019 6:03 pm

I finished assembling my GBZ yesterday and now have issues with getting the case to close completely. It is a good way off from sealing, around 3/8" or so I'd guess.

One thing I am considering is to relocate some of the passive components from the Targus USB hub. There are two capacitors and (I think) an oscillating crystal that are pushing up the Raspberry Pi and the display board, causing interference with the power charger and shutdown switch on the rear portion of the case.

I have circled the two groups in the attached image. Just curious if anyone has done the same and had any issues? The GBZ ran great in its trial run, good controls and sound. Just need to close it up...

Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Those are probably bypass capacitors which should be placed as close as possible to the IC. You can try relocating them but shouldn't be too far. Or you buy smaller smd capacitors.

Thanks for the tip! I would probably wire them up near the top edge of the USB PCB in the picture above. That would b far enough to clear the Pi. Would that be too far?
