One of my main goals is to save the battery bay and drill little to none of it. Still working on power source but I'm planning on using 4x14500 li-ion cells in parallel which should give me about 3200mAh battery at 3.7V and it'll fit perfectly in the battery bay.

Screen buttons in battery bay
I replaced the buttons that came with the screen with 3 that I bought from Fry's. The buttons are lower profile and just long enough to peek through to the battery bay.

Button holes
I didn't have tracing paper so tried to use some tissue paper but it wasn't white. The black case also made it hard to see the graphite transfer so I drew some parallel lines to the existing buttons to get a general position. I also used an xacto knife to score out the portion of the screen I wanted to take off. I'm using the screen protector that came with the screen and cut it down to size with an xacto knife. I found that I could make really clean lines by repeatedly scoring and breaking it off.

You can see here. I tried to use the dremel to cut the top edge first and it's a little rough. The other 3 sides, I scored with an xacto knife and breaking off.

Looking great. I like what you've done with the screen buttons - I'll be interested to see how the space works out and might try something similar

i found now a battery (54x54x0.9mm) so it fits perfectly in the battery bay

off topic: what is the name of the game and platform in the first picture. Im sure it has to do with donkey kong but which exactly. In looking for that for weeks now,,,,,

The game is Donkey Kong on the NES platform. What you see there is level 2 of the game.

What did you use for the screen cover?

Thought I'd just mention that other users are using the plastic screen cover that came with the screen.

@Rod2D2 I actually took the idea from @chiz

The screen I got from amazon comes in a housing and if you use a heat gun, you can soften the blue holding the screen cover to the housing.

Once it was off, I measured the black bevel to make sure it would be the same size all the way around the screen area by using the original gameboy screen as a guide. Then, I just used an xacto knife to score the screen protector repeatedly (with a ruler) until I could break off the extra parts.

Great progress, i especially like the idea of putting the displays control buttons into the battery bay.
