Collecting information on alternative displays - please contribute

a project member told me that the voltage regulator is on the upper left corner (JW5022 - a chinese clone of MP1482)...
so, where to start? pin3 should do 5V?
since I've never had to mod a driver-board, I am thankful for any hints and tipps

You could look for a datasheet of this voltage regulator. Or you can measure the pins of the IC against your ground. The one where you can measure 5V will the the one to solder you V(in) to.

For the versions of these screens that don't come with a brightness breakout board, anyone know of a way to change the brightness?

My control board has the space for a breakout connector but didn't come with one. I'm guessing it must be controlled by PWM rather than voltage?

You might be able to control it that way, but you'll need the help of someone with a breakout board to map everything and give you the control "protocol" I think. Also I would be prepared for some custom code to be needed to make this work from the pi.

The sad thing is, i do not find any usefull information about this regulator on the web - it is a JW5022 EP117CF
Anyway, I measured my way through - the Diode (marked red 5V in the picture) does the trick...

I bought the Amazon display from seller she-love, which appears to be one of the few 5V-confirmed LCDs that are easily obtainable in the US.

I soldered the jumper wire between the IC and red wire as shown in the wiki, and wired it up per Felder's instructions. When I power up the Pi, nothing happens. I even managed to desolder the IC and put the jumper back on that same pin -- still nothing. The display doesn't seem to turn on.

Is there a trick to getting it to work? Do i need to edit a config file? Do i need to setup RetroPie over HDMI first?

EDIT: Ordered an HDMI adapter so I can try setting it up over HDMI. I also ordered another of this same LCD, this time from seller EPathDeals (Prime shipping in the US). I noticed on Alibaba that someone bought their version of this display and said it worked for a Gameboy build. Will report back...

EDIT 2: I haven't cracked it open yet, but can confirm that the EPathDeals LCD from Amazon works on 5V with no modification necessary. It has buttons, so there's always the chance it's the same as the big ATian board, but we already know that can be cut to fit the DMG case

EDIT 3: Looks like the EPathDeals/Amazon board is V7 of the BW board. No cutting required.

@Bendra, got that one too, waiting for it now, can you confirm that it is really working out of the box, no mods to do ? instead of wiring to a 12v jack, wire to a usb or 5v and that's all ?
also, did you figure out more about the resolution ?

Have ordered 4 of the until today and all where the same model (see my pictures in this thread). All worked on 5v out of the box without modification. It is still no guarantee though, since models can change from batch to batch. Did not check resolution further, but with the given price it seems to be 320x240 only. If I compare both the Adafruit and this one together resolution looks also the same.

@Brenda, I got today the screen you posted. Could you tell the specs of the power suply you used? I'm asking as it hasn't worked for me yet :S.

What do you mean by power supply specs? Just wire all of the four wires to the raspberry pi and it should work. It is the same procedure wermy is showing in one of his videos.

I mean 5V 700mA or 12V 400mA. It's shown in the charger with the out label. I haven't soldered it to the rasp yet as I want to check everything first.

Got the Amazon seller "EPathDeals" LCD this afternoon (Prime shipping is nice). It works with 5V without any modification. I'll update this post with a picture of the board once I crack it open.

EDIT: Looks like V7 of the BW board. It includes the button board, it's just offscreen in this pic.

The wiki could use some editing for clarity. It shows two variant 7 and neither of them shows the seller you mentioned.

Also, @wermy may want to edit part 3 guide since it seems to show that seller in a bad light. If he really is now selling a version that doesn't need to be cut down.
