Buying Wires

Post by pmeledeo » Mon Oct 03, 2016 9:06 am

I apologize if this has been answered several times before. I'm either not good at navigating through the forums or I am not searching the proper terms but I cannot find my answer so I figured I would just ask in a new topic.

Like many others on here, I am new to electronics projects and am trying to find wires to buy to use in this project. I know Wermy mentioned in his guides that you can cut up old USB cables lying around. That's good but I would like to get a fresh set of wires rather than chopping up my USB cables. Plus I feel like it would be good to have some anyway. Is there something specific I need to look for when buying these colored wires? Do I need to get different wires for different parts of the build? I saw this ribbon cable on Amazon and wondered if something like this was suitable to use for every part of the build.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys.

That's the exact product I purchased. Don't forget you'll need a wire stripper. Mine only went to 22 gauge I think, and still worked. A commenter on that product said that the rainbow wire is 28 gauge.

About the USB cable. Go to Good Will on a 50% off day and get a couple for $.50. Get those old ones with the square end on them like printers use. Then use that cable when running anything usb or power.

Oh okay great. Yeah I knew I would need a wire stripper as well and figured I would cross that bridge once I actually got the wires. So use the USB cable wires for anything power/USB related but for everything else I can just use this rainbow ribbon?

That's how I used mine. The controller board connected to the Teensy I did with the rainbow wire. And if you have the Kitsch Bent board, you'll need something as small as that rainbow wire.

And pretty much everything else I did using the USB cable.

I'd imagine that when I get Helders new AIO board, I'll pretty much only use the USB cable, except for the L+R buttons.

Yeah I preordered Helder's new board so when that comes in I'll basically be following Wermy's latest 2-part guide. I just wanted to make sure I was using the proper cables as I am clueless as to what sort of wires are necessary for different things.
