Could this be of use?
Its a smaller PB 1000 apparently.

Unfortunately those "Basic" models don't charge the battery - they are just for charging other devices from an already-charged battery.

Oh.

Aight then.

(By the by, will the guides be chopped up like the Gameboy Zero or all in one like the Lamp Zapper?)

how much do you think this will cost when its all said and done, really want to build one for my best friend who doesn't appreciate the game-boy zero, but would love this for playing Pokemon. It would be great if we could build these things for $60 or less...
I still have yet to complete my game-boy zero, and all I have is 50 dollars worth of case parts, buttons cartridge readers and wermy's screen bracket. Still need a SAIO board, and a new pi since my zero is going into an Altoids can now. (Which is fine, because I wanted to be able to play Goldeneye 007 on my game-boy, so I'll just cram a Pi 3 in there :P )

as far as different screen sizes are concerned, i think you might be able to get away with a 2.8" screen!! I have just been waving my measuring stick about, and the naked screen isnt too much bigger than the 2.2" screen with its pcb

we are talking 10mm taller (so thats 5mm each side)
Image

and 3mm wider (so 1.5mm each side)

does anyone have an altoids tin handy? the 2.8" screen is 70x50mm, a quck google says the internals of the tin are 2.24" (56.9mm) x 3.6"(91.5mm) so that might just fit!!!

you then of course have the issue of attaching the cables. I could pretty quickly knock up an interface board like the one i have already made, only slightly improved, so the cables come down to the bottom, and there are the 18 pins the larger screens have (for touch)

Get a small cheep LCD in your project https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=2312
Wrap it all round a battery https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2292
Or use a custom PCB to make it really small https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2512
or make it really really really really tiny!! https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=2919

I can already see the main issue here:

The top and sides need clearance to close the lid but more importantly the bottom needs clearance not only for the bottom lip itself but for the whole closing motion. If you look at Wermy's images the bottom of his 3-d print is flat and doesn't follow the bevel like the top and sides do. I'm sure this is to allow for clearance upon closing the lid.

The better question would be to Wermy directly on how tall his 3d model is? because I'm betting it is pretty close to as large as possible given the space.

The big problem you run into is that you lose a good 5mm or so of vertical space due to the way the hinge swings (plus about 1.5mm or so all around the boarder where the bottom half of the tin meets the lid, if that makes sense). I have some 2.8" bare screens without a board that I was hoping to use initially - there just isn't enough room unfortunately.

Exactly. You have about 50mm to work with vertically, and about 70ish horizontally. So while the screen itself might fit just barely, you'd have no room for a bezel at all. I can measure more accurately when I get home.

Edit: also those inner dimensions for the altoids tins don't take into account the 13mm or so corner radius.

I'm still curious how close the 2.4" is to fitting? is it close enough that a little modification of the PCB (i.e. taking off the sharp corners) would make it work? Or is it just too big all around?

I don't have a screen to test with, but I'll print out something the size of the board/screen to test it out. :)

That's pretty close.

For now, though, things that are pretty much nailed down:
• Pi 0 W
• Powerboost 500 (I'll do some more thorough testing but the whole thing came in under 500mA in some brief testing, meaning it should be able to charge and play at the same time. I'll test to make sure if that's a concern for folks)
• 1200mAh lipo battery from Adafruit
• DS Lite buttons/rubber pads
• And this is the screen I used: http://www.ebay.com/itm/252135075697?_t ... 2749.l2649
That is amazingly close to the contents of my spare parts bin :D
