Veteran's 2nd GBZ (HDMI Screen) (Completed)
here comes another one......
my first build was a great learning experience (and the finished result, I am more than happy with)....
but I wanted something different for my second build, doing the same thing over a again just didnt excite me....
ohh and again i wont be using any hotglue in this build....
This build will have....
Pi Zero W (£9.60)
3.5 HDMI LCD (£14.00)
Helder Gameboy Zero Button PCB (£8.00)
Helder Power Strip (£1.00)
Generic Power Boost PSU (£2.00)
Cambles Safe Shutdown (£13.50)
4000mah 3.7 Lipo Battery (£10.50)
Mini Audio Class D amplifier board (2 x 3W) (£1.00 includes the headphone socket)
2 x Netbook Speakers (£1.50)
Deadpan Robot Screen Surround + Buttons (£8.00)
i have a pro micro controller, but most probably wont use it and wire the button pcb via gpio.... this will eliminate the need for a usb hub and also keep the pi zero usb socket free to be used for the external 2.0 socket (less is more)....
i'm going to be using the audio from the HDMI screen, via its headphone socket, so just needed the audio board to power the speakers
even though i never got it from Helder, i'm cuffed it has Helder name on it.... the build wouldnt feel right without it....
now i'm aiming for another clean build, so some 3d printed parts were needed (used 3dhubs, need to get me a 3d printer)
total cost (£12.50 inc postage)
links to STL files used in this build can be found here.....
https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 180#p48704
but had to modify it a bit, as one of the screw post looked a little flaky and i'm going to remove the backlight switch and micro usb port...
, and i didnt like the zeroboy logo (sorry zeroboy)
but i did knock up a couple of holders, one for the audio board and another for the power strip
and i got a drill guide printed.....
thats it for now..... fineshed build pics to follow.....

Hell yes! Very excited you're doing another build. I like how resourceful you were in taking audio from the screen and using the GPIO pins so you don't need a USB hub. Looking forward to more!
I've just finished my milk.

Looking forward to your completed build on this. Im interested to know how the HDMI screen compares to the usual 3.5" composite screens.

I'm going to follow this thread too hahaha, you have brilliant ideas such as your holders for PCBs.
Any chance for us that you may share those 3D files ?

Re: Veteran's 2nd GBZ (HDMI Screen + Stereo Sound) (WIP)
I am wondering where you will throw the two speakers for stereo sound.
I've ordered everything for my first build but yet didn't receive anything so i can't figure out exactly the room i will have.
Didi you go for round 28mm speakers ?
I've seen on Aliexpress square speakers with very small footprint and depth but for now, i've ordered round classic ones. I will see while building what to do exactly !
Thanks for your posts, you are building smart GBZ with plenty of ingenious stuffs

the only place they can go is the original speaker location (because of the grill/cutouts)
unless you looking to make further modifications to the case/shell (which could end up disastrous)....
i will have to modify the part of the case/shell that holds the riginal speaker... but not by much
i searched around for a while, and even bought speakers for tablets of aliexpress (which are also really cheap to buy)
but ended up buying a pair of laptop speakers of ebay (Used/salvaged), and the real reason for that was the buid quality on these (even as used) just look better than the speakers you get in most tablets.... but im sure the tablet speakers would have been fine

Ok i see now, you are going to combine two speakers into the original place.
I thought about this solution but the stereo effect will be greatly reduced by this proximity...
I know other place would lead to shell modifications and i'm not sure i want to dive into this as my goal is minimum outside cutouts...

not really...YaYa wrote: ↑Sun Jul 09, 2017 3:29 amOk i see now, you are going to combine two speakers into the original place.

from my testing the speakers sound alot better then running audio through a mono speaker setup...
especially as i going to have kodi on this build and use it as a media player (not steaming anything) with music and maybe the odd video...
the other option would be to butcher/frankenstein the case, but that a step too far for me and wont achieve the look that im aiming for...

I agree that butchering the case is not a solution
I found some real speakers suitable for GBZ projects but the magnet is bigger that those cheap Chinese speakers so it is needed to cut the battery case and i don't want to as i am intended to use a real cell phone battery with pogo connectors.
I want the build to stay as authentic as possible.
I have a broken asus laptop, gonna dig in it to see what type of speakers is inside
