What else would I need to the screen in terms of connectors/control boards? This is my first build, so I'm sorta flying blind regarding the display.

Yes to this display. That would work as long as you and I both believe that we can get the ribbon cable into the bottom half of the system

I've been in contact with the user "kite" on this forum about that, but not as of late. I suggest you ask him about this and send him a link to this thread, he should know what you mean!

I'm going to say no to this display, only because in the top half of the DS Lite, the display that you linked above fits very snug with some small modification to the plastic. There is no room for that control board that is mounted to the back of that display, so I wouldn't suggest trying that one. I have to use some slight force to close the top parts together to fit the display in as it is.

It's not really, I'm afraid. I haven't had a chance to order a screen yet, and I'm still deciding what to do about the PCB. I'll probably come back to it over the summer though!

Hi, I'm new to this so forgive me if this is a silly question.

What are the boards in the pictures? I recognise the Powerboost but I'm unsure what the other ones do.
Also, would a 500c supply enough power for this project?
As well, how did you get the audio on the Zero?

http://market.sudomod.com/pwm-audio-b/ in the first set of pics, replaced by http://market.sudomod.com/pwm-audio-buffer-board-smd/ in the later pics, is a PWM audio filter. The first uses through-hole components (so is larger); the latter uses SMD components (so is thinner), but they both do the same thing. It is a filter to remove noise from the PWM audio signal, to give a cleaner sound (theoretically - I think the jury is still out on whether it's worth it).

This means he's using PWM audio - in essence, he's pulling audio from a GPIO pin, rather than using a USB sound card. There have been a bunch of PWM audio threads here on Sudomod, if you want more info.

https://www.adafruit.com/product/987 is a stereo amplifier. An amp is necessary to get useable volume levels, and a stereo amp lets you have stereo sound; you can use a mono amp if you're only using one speaker.

https://www.pjrc.com/teensy/teensyLC.html is a Teensy LC, which allows you to connect the controls via USB. Wire the buttons to the Teensy; program the Teensy so that button inputs to correspond with keyboard inputs; plug in to Pi. See Wermy's guides for more info.

http://www.acidmods.com/moddedmatt/dslight%20pinout.jpg is the original DS Lite PCB. He's chopped it up to use the membrane switches - essentially the same as Wermy chopping up the Gameboy PCB in his original GBZ. He'll connect wires to the traces, then connect those wires to the Teensy, then wire the Teensy to the Pi's USB port (after programming the Teensy).
