I've made one with helders board and one with a pcb from kitsch bent. Both turned out great but the plain pcb was a bit more of a challenge.

Yeah I'm gong to have to do it with either a kitsch bent or one on eBay board. Helder's and Kite's AIO boards are both sold out (I'm pretty sure?)

I'll keep an eye out on the For Sale/Trade forum.

You can learn gradually if you have the budget. Start with Kite's SAIO, where you would learn the basics (case modding, runnings test with Retropie, etc...). And then you can go for the oldschool GBZ build with teensies, custom safe shutdowns, powerstrips, powerboosts, audio setup, screen setup, custom case modding for your config, etc...). Needless to say you would learn more from the latter, but it is a less frustrating learning curve and in the meanwhile you would have a functional and stable game boy with Kite's SAIO. Not everybody has to be hardcore, it needs to be fun as well! ;)
