 How are you connecting the joystick to the pi?
The sticks have 6 pins, 4 of which are connected in pairs. I connect GND to ground, VCC to VCC and the outputs to the analogue inputs on my pro-micro.

I would like to add the adafruit joystick or maybe a psp one to my build.

Yes, that is the same one I am using.
An amateur at best. Current project: GB 'Athena'
