I don't know if this is the problem, but maybe it uses the "built in" soundcard until it initializes the USB one?
Then you could take a look here:
Random lack of sound on startup
If you have no sound on startup, this may be because your system has multiple sound cards, and their order may sometimes change on startup. If this is the case, try setting the default sound card.
If you use mpd and the configuration tips above do not work for you, try reading this instead.

I've got a crazy idea but could actually work... How about if you add another wire to the speaker going to the built-in audio out? This way, both built-in audio and audio from the USB DAC will be routed to the same audio circuit. I think this even gives the flexibility to switch the audio configuration anytime as the circuit allows either.

Would anyone be able to answer a stupid questions for me. I understand the concept of mono vs stereo sound. Mono means one source to whatever speaker. Stereo means two different sources going to different speakers. How will mono sound react when going to a pair of headphones R speaker and L speaker? Will the same sounds go to both R and L headphone buds or will only one speaker receive sound?

As Robots86 said, to both. But only if you wired it correctly. You have to wire both channels to the headphone jack and not just one.

Hi guys, I bought this USB DAC from AliExpress.

I have the idea that it is a 5 pin headphone connector by looking at the soldering. Would it be possible that this takes away the need for an separate 5 pin connector..

Can anyone confirm?

Just in case this helps anyone with USB sound. Here is my diagram from my GB0 project.

the 2 things I would point out as important that I had to find out the hard way are:
1. You need to solder the ground of the volume wheel to the headphone jack ground
2. You need to solder the 5v of the amp to the PI0 GPIO 5v

Hope this helps people.
