Battery ?

Post by ChadWardenn » Mon Dec 11, 2017 6:49 am

Hello,
I'm new in the creation of console and I would like to make a game boy color zero only to play game boy, color and advance games (nothing else). Since the game boy color is small, I want to take a little battery. I found a Nintendo DS one (3.7V 1000mAh) do you think it will work? And how long will the battery last when playing ?
Thanks and sorry if my english is strange sometime, It's not my native language.

Your battery has approximately 3,7Wh. The Pi Zero alone uses about 0,9W/h (5,0V, 180mA).
On top comes your display.
If you add all of your electronic and use a rule of thumb for the conversion in the powerboost (approx. 85% efficiency) you can measure your runtime.

If you send a list of all your planned components, we can make a more precise forecast.

the MAXIMUM play time will be around 1.5 hours maybe 2, can't expect more but as salami suggested, a complete part list can help narrow the value

Typical builds with a 2200 mah from adafruit get about 3 to 3.5 hours. You can stretch that a bit more if you follow Yaya's power guide (2nd link in his sig, its also in the wiki under Guides). SO just going off that, a 1000mah will get you roughly half that time, about 1.5-2 hours just like Yaya says. And thats baseline. If you're using USB based controls (arduino or teensy) you'll get less than that.

Thanks for all the answers. I want to use these things (+the original gbc button PCB and the raspberry zero (W or not idk...)) :
https://www.amazon.fr/Aihasd-Lithium-Ba ... cro+usb+5v

https://www.amazon.fr/Aihasd-MT3608-Boo ... DC-DC+Step (I would like to find something better and automatic because here you have to adjust manually but I can't find one)

https://www.amazon.fr/Haut-parleurs-Nin ... do+gameboy

https://www.amazon.fr/ELEGIANT-PAM8403- ... C3%A9rique

https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B006MP ... UTF8&psc=1 (after disassembly but idk if it's good. Maybe use a simpler screen)

https://www.amazon.fr/SODIAL-Adaptateur ... ndows+7%29 (after disassembly)

I also want to put a battery meter. In fact, I would like to put as few components as possible. just the ones that are mandatory. Is it good or I can find better ?

What is the best battery I can find who can fit in a game boy color ? Maybe 2 AA battery linked ?

the speakers are ok ....
the usb sound card is a good cheap option too...

but the amp is going to give you issues....
its bigger than the other class d amp, and you'll also have to relocate or replace that capacitor to save space as it sticks out....
plus the volume wheel is alot bigger than a standard GBC wheel (you'll have to accommodate for that)
and you'll have to remove the speaker connections (spending time removing and placing can be better spent elsewhere)

also rather than a backup camara monitor, just go with the gearbest screen the latest version doesnt require a mod and IMHO its slightly better than the backup monitors

Thanks you so much for the anwser. maybe I can use the original amp from the gbc ? Also, should I use a raspberry zero W or "not W" ? (I suppose the W is more energy hungry ?)
Now I miss these things :
- a "minimalist" battery indicator (or maybe there is a battery meter in the os ?)
- an automatic booster to go up to 5V or a little more (if it exist)
- a compact battery

I think that's all. I don't thing i miss something.
Also, I found this battery that looks good ( http://www.befr.ebay.be/itm/Batterie-Ba ... Swxw1ZqZbX ) but I don't know where the + and - poles are. Can you enlighten me on this?

Sorry for all these questions. you are kind to answer me.

a pi zero W is the way to go, not having it will mean you'll need to add a wifi dongle (besides it doesnt add a drastic amount to the power draw)
your not going to be able to use the GBC amp, you'll have to find another solution....

as for the battery....
decide where you want it to go, measure that area and then search for a battery that will fit....
a little tip, most lipo have a 6 digit number code on them, this code is normally (most of the time) the battery dimensions

Image

125054 are the dimension of the battery.....
have a good look online, you should be able to find one that fits your requirements.....

Ok thanks. I'll find a battery when I have all my things and when I know where I'm gonna put them in the gbc.
(And fail in my link. Here is the battery who I don't know were the + and - are : http://www.befr.ebay.be/itm/Batterie-Ba ... Swxw1ZqZbX )
also it's a Li-Polymer and not a li-ion battery. Is it important ?

Is it really a big deal to have wifi with my gbc ? I mean, I just want to play games on my micro SD and nothing else.

Do you mean this screen ? : https://www.gearbest.com/lcd-led-displa ... 31777.html ou this one ? : https://www.gearbest.com/lcd-led-displa ... 31778.html (i think 3.5 is a little to big for the gbc isn't it ?)

I just miss the battery indicator and maybe a better booster who is automatic. The road is almost over ! :D
