Vanilla Raspbian vs. RetroPi

Post by Synnth3t1k » Fri Jun 03, 2016 10:21 pm

I'm curious as to what OS everyone is using. Are you using Vanilla Raspbian, or are you using RetroPi? What are the pros and cons of both systems?

As far as I can tell, RetroPie has been the go to OS around here. It works, and it works well, and that is what wermy is featuring in his guides. I haven't personally used vanilla raspbian enough to give an honest opinion about it, let alone pros and cons, but retropie hasn't disappointed.

Wouldn't vanilla with emulators strain the system more? Whereas retropie has all emulators and extra stuff preloaded without having all the unnecessary stuff that a full blown OS has.

I was only wondering. I was thinking about trying to load movies onto a memory card and run it. I'm not to sure how much stress it would put on the pi0. My wife and I are about to make a road trip down to Florida. I figured it would be something nice for her, besides playing retro games. I know she's going to be burning up Mario Bros. 3

Also, how would you navigate the terminal/X with only a few buttons and no keyboard?

I'm actually going the Attract-Mode way. It's going to be maintained. I have emulation station and attract-mode frontends plus Kodi so I can switch with only the buttons between movie watching, streaming and games. Will probably even Launch into Kodi later when everything is set and then Attract-Mode from there. Or just keep Attract-Mode and go into Kodi. But everything works!

If you are going the retropie route and want to watch movies I would recommend adding the Kodi to the "ports" part!
