[resolved] circuit sword sanity check (screen lines)

Post by Gabbo » Fri Jun 29, 2018 12:26 pm

Hey all,

I wanted to throw some troubleshooting steps with the problem I've been having out there and see if anyone has some thoughts or advice.

To state the problem plainly, the screen my new circuit sword kit seems to have strange lines that extend to the edge of the screen. These are not static lines, because they follow graphics as they move around the screen. When I connect an HDMI to the board, the output is totally fine.

Here is an example of the issue I am seeing:

Here has been my troubleshooting adventure so far:

1. I've reseated the cable many times thinking that was the most likely cause. Cable itself seems fine. Issue does not improve or change.

2. Playing with Config.txt. I've played with some of the overscan settings. I don't really know what I'm doing here but spent a while with trial and error. No change or improvement (assuming my change didn't cause the screen to not work at all).

3. Starting fresh with an image on the SD card. Image is the "retropie-4.4-rpi2_rpi3-wifi_CSO_CM3_20180603-154410.zip" from Kite's GitHub page. No change.

4. Reseated RasPi module. No change.

5. Who wears short shorts? Maybe the screen case is shorting on something? I booted with the screen not touching any part of the board. For most of the testing I've had the front part of the case. It improves, but the issue is still there. I'd take a pic but I don't have enough hands. ;) Basically the lines are still there, but they are thiner and less numerous.

So, is there something I'm missing (not using the right software, config settings that are known to work with this screen, etc etc)? Or is this perhaps a bum / damages screen? I have some other screens from another build that I may be able to connect just to see if it's not a screen issue at all.

Musings, thoughts, criticisms all welcome. Thanks in advance!

Hey, good debugging and plenty of info :) Your image links do not work by the way, consider using imgur or something, dropbox has changed to not allow hotlinks/embedded images/etc.

I think you have the same issue as this poster: https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 122#p62848

If you could take a picture in good strong light, of the BACK of the LCD connector on the PCB, as per picture #3 in that post above, we might be able to identify the issue precisely :)

Ah, praise from caesar! :P

You hit the nail on the head. The most damning thing is that I read that post before I posted this and could not for the life of me see the issue in that picture.

I stared at it for a good 30 min before I noticed. Then saw the same thing on mine. But it was hard AF to see. One lille blob of solder was bridging two pins on the LCD port on the main PCB. Tried using a sewing needle to scrape it off but that wasn't working. I took your suggestion and sent it to flux city and put the iron to it and bam, right as rain! :D

Here are the pics just in case someone is seeing something similar:

Woohoo! :D Nice work on fixing it!

This is the first batch that this has happened with.. and I've made a new tester thing that means I'll be able to pick up this issue before shipping out so any new orders shouldn't have this ;)

FYI, here's a nice close up of what one looks like for those unable to see, it's so tiny a photo is really needed to zoom in on it to see :)
