yousai's build

Post by yousai » Wed Jun 15, 2016 7:09 am

Guess I wanted to show everyone what I've been working on the past couple weeks. I originally saw the GBZ video and immediately knew I had to build one!

After a quick search though I saw right away that getting hands on a RPi0 is outright impossible. And I won't support people trying to resell them at 1000% margin... so I found the SuperGameGirl project, and hey my friend has a 3D printer! So we're both building one. :)

I don't have many progress pics, but I waited for the longest time for the displays to finally arrive after waiting a couple other weeks for the Adafruit display (and missed it once it was back in stock for a short time).

They came with a real nice packaging (both boxes were taped together and sent as one parcel, neat!):

Testing without modification on 9V.

And testing with modifications as supplied by the vendor.

The image flickers a little bit, I hope this is just my friend's rusty old N64 and cheap composite cables.
We did fry one tiny coil on one of the displays, because we switched the polarity: We used the cables on the included harness as cues before noticing that they swapped the red and black cables... who does this?! The PCB itself is correctly labelled but you don't see that until removing the plastic connector.

Finished with the first part, main PCB with shoulder buttons and 1000C!

The case with front and buttons placed, they're glow-in-the-dark!

My most recent state:

Finished soldering together the audio amp, speaker and headphone jack, all the wiring on the Raspberry Pi.

All that's left now is finishing the case (some, err, a lot of sanding required) and waiting for the stereo volume knob. I originally ordered a 3-pin potentiometer which obviously can't be used for a stereo signal, so I'll be doing mono until it arrives I guess.

Very nice! I started this project, got 90% of the way done with it. I ran into problems with my case, not sure if it was the 3d print or just the way it's built but I snapped 4 of the screw supports off before I got fed up and said F it. My advise is before you start putting screws in the supports, tap all of them out first so the screws go in easier.

If you need any spare parts, specifically the supergamegirl control board or the battery they recommend let me know as I'm not going to be using them anymore.

Damn, so close to the finish line! :(
I already effed up a tiny bit by pushing the charging led in too hard and now there's a tiny crack next to it. I'll definitely tap them as the screw posts aren't perfect and are partially blocked because of the generated supports (we printed the case upside down, gives a nicer finish on the outside!)

Where are you located? :) I could always use a spare battery but right now we already have everything at least twice. 8-)

I ordered most stuff from aliexpress in the smallest quantities I could find, which still meant like 100pcs for the tiny capacitors of which you'll only need 2.

I'm in florida, shipping might be cost prohibited lol

And yes, I too have many transistors and tiny buttoms(the back buttons) that I'll probably never use again lol

I was very close to trying to make these boards work in a Gameboy until I found new boards specifically for gameboy. If I had a 3d printer I would continue that project. Nice to see someone's Supergamegirl project coming to life.
