Has anyone got any idea if it's compatible with the Freeplay CM3?
Hardware is but the software may not be, possible you could carry kites changes over to the freeplay image

So if we were waiting for the Sword to purchase the CM, would it be safe to say that the new Lite version would be good? The only thing majorly different is the lack of onboard storage, correct? Figured saving a few bucks over the previous version is always better.

The lite version is the one you need

I've fixed the software in the latest image now. So from now on it's a simple swap out. Just to note the benefits are very small and 'as is' without overclock, there is literally no difference! The original kit includes a heatsink and fan, so the 'thermal gains' is moot because the fan keeps it well below any downclocking speeds. To anyone reading, you don't need to upgrade :)
Have you run any tests to see how far you can overclock the CM3+?

Other than putting it at the 3B+ clocks (1400MHz) no, it worked fine at those speeds (basically, mirror whatever the 3B+ does and it'll work here).

if I were to use the cm3+ without overclocking, would it be safe to say I wouldn't need the fan? I only plan playing pre PS1 systems anyway, not having to mod ducts or vents for the fan would be great.

You'll have to try it out. I briefly tried it and temperatures were pretty stable without fan. Probably put a heatsink on there just to help a little but the plan for future batches is to not include the fan (as it is becoming very difficult and expensive to source).

maybe you should sell a sword kit without the fan or cm3 next round. or without the fan and with the cm3+.

So if I have been using a CM3 and want to swap over to the CM3+, do I simply use ./update.sh and swap out the modules or do I have to reflash the new image and start fresh?

Yep, ./update.sh first, then swap. If anything goes wrong you can just use the newest image (and no update needed)
