[Solved]Final Issues Help for my SAIO v0.6C (Wifi & Audio)

Post by Todd5314 » Thu Sep 24, 2020 10:14 pm

Hi all,

I'm trying to finish out my build and after plugging my power cord into the right port (sheepish grin), I am on my final set of issues which fall into two categories: WiFi & Audio.

I've combed through all 17 pages on Kite's forum + the SAIO instructions + other tips I've seen and here is what I have tried:

1) WiFi - In the configuration of retropie, I don't see any networks. I've tried the WPA_Supplicant technique for WiFi, but that didn't help. When the unit boots, I see the wireless icon with an X through it, but it goes away after the initial splash screen returns to "text boot".

2) Audio - here are multiple problems that I think may just be one root cause. They are: Volume dial doesn't work, Headphone Jack doesn't work, Speaker doesn't work. If I plug in headphones and touch the LCD ribbon, I hear a buzz, so it is powered. I've tried all the options/configs in the configuration screens and turned up the volume in those screens, but just don't get anything. I've double checked the plugs, but I am at a loss.

I've tried to gather as much info as I can and would love some help - see pics below.

Picture 1 is my stuff all plugged in correctly :-)

Picture 2 is my unit in Tester Mode with what are the expected results according to the SAIO guide.

Picture 3 is what I get when I press the "mode" button - only that one (STS) LED lights up fully.

Random ideas:
1) For audio - I see that the volume potentiometer doesn't work if the USB port is enabled. Maybe that is it? I don't see any switches.
2) For audio - should I mess with this in the config.txt?
# Disable onboard audio
dtparam=audio=off

For WiFi, I'm not sure what else to do. I'm pretty sure this version has it since there is an LED?

Any help would be appreciated! I am excited to finish this up after 3 years :-).

Thanks!

Hello!

1) WIFI: Which version of the Pi Zero do you have? I can't quite see from the pictures. There are two version, the Pi Zero and Pi Zero W. The latter HAS on board wifi, the other doesn't. The FAIL is on USB WIFI, and looking at the board the footprint for the USB wifi module is missing (because this board didn't have it populated due to recomending the use of the Pi Zero W. The USB module should be this https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32817961824.html

2) AUDIO: Can you check those 5pin connectors on the bottom of the back board and also on the main board at the bottom near the headphone jack.. can you check inside the connectors and see the pins on the inside, are any bent? If so using a needle or pointy tweezers they can be bent back to pointing straight out

Thanks Kite!

1) My order was for a Zero W and based on pics online, I am pretty sure I have the wireless module (added Pic below).

2) All the audio pins look great.

Any logs I can get etc.?

Which Pi solder points are the network and audio? Maybe those aren't connected?

OK - I don't have any idea why, but the new SD card I mentioned in this https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=9367 topic fixed both the wireless and audio. I was able to connect over wireless to the unit, upload games and hear music from the games via speaker (which was quiet, so I'll research that) and the 3.5mm jack. Also the volume potentiometer worked!

The only thing that is weird is that I don't hear any audio in the RetroPie menus. I'll research that too.

Looks like the no menu sound was a change to RetroPie in 2016ish...

https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/256 ... u-sounds/7

You have to replace a WAV to get one back.

No - it was the older version.

And now the speaker stopped working (3.5mm jack works)...

Yeah - there is a speaker icon with an X through it.

What is the combo key to unmute?
